Author self deleting email
Dave

2004-06-11, 8:55 am

I would like a program that I could embed in an email that will cause the
email to delete itself after a certain amount of time. Either that or turn
the text to gibberish... is there a VB person out there that could create
such a thing that would work in an email?
This is NOT for malicious purposes.... just a practical joke on a friend.

I think he meant (and must agree) there's no hope of anyone with any
principles, creating something like this for you, regardless of it's
intended usage.

It surely wouldn't work on my PC. No html allowed. All support for html
(both mail and news) has been disabled.

Dave,

the problem with this is that you want to execute code on the client -
and expirience shows that this is a BAD idea so it just isn't
supported any more.

If that is possible then sooner or later someone will make it.
It is inevitable.

Well... I still want OE back <g> All in all though it has some nice
features. One that's handy is the connecting lines that connect parts of
a thread together. OE made it kinda hard to tell who was replying to
what when the threads had a lot of replies to each question (when the
thread "tree" was deep).

It has nice junk filters (that are turned off since I use Mailwasher
<g> )... before turning them off, they worked great <g>.

It's "skinnable" with a few of their "themes". It seems better suited
for offline news than OE is. That may interest some... not me. I read
everything "online".

fwiw, it's windows (groups/mail/messages/etc) are arranged the same as
OE when you load it the first time, you can re-arrange them if you like.

Unlike OE, you can have multiple instances running. That's one feature
I've seen requests for (in OE). I'm not really interested in that
feature. Once in a while I end up with a couple instances running by
accident (mailwasher and clumsy fingers are the culprit). No harm done..
it just takes more room on the taskbar.

fwiw, I briefly tried Agent and it just didn't suit me. Thunderbird's
definitely worth a try.

The one drawback (so far) is that it doesn't currently support multiple
newsgroup accounts on the same server. In OE, I had one msnews acct
where I subscribed to VB Classic groups only. I had another where I
subscribed to "other" groups. Can't do that in Thunderbird.

In OE, I had one account setup on a different news server with a set of
subscribed groups... and another (same server) setup with a set of
subscribed groups. In this case, the only difference was the password I
used to log into these groups. No such support in Thunderbird right now.

would it work if you use aliases? set one up as 'news.microsoft.com' and
another as 'msnews.microsoft.com' and you get to the same server. You might
also be able to make local hosts entries to define other aliases.

hmmm... never tried. I'll look into that and see what I can find out.
Thanks for the idea.

along the same lines, drop an entry into your Hosts file
(or DNS if you "self supply") for MSNews and call it whatever
you like...

I haven't thought of running multiple instances, but that would be
nice to separate the newsgroup reader from the mail reader so
they can keep a different folders.dbx.

Microsoft has fixed OE somewhat in respect to the folders.dbx,
whereby if you deleted it, you used to have to resubscribe to
the newsgroups and download everything all over again, but
that has been fixed. OE seems to peruse the mail folder now,
to get the names to the subscribed newsgroups, or perhaps
reads it from another location now.

The only other way I can see what I want achieved is for OE
to make two folders.dbx files, one for the newsgroups and
one for the email. That way the newsreader folders.dbx could
be deleted and that would be a blessing, because if there's a
power outage while downloading stuff, that particular folder
can easily be corrupted. Maybe someone from Microsoft
will look into this. I'm sure the guys that set up OE will
know exactly what I'm talking about.

Microsoft does have two DNS names for their newsreaders.
Both names seem to point to the same server:

news://news.microsoft.com
news://msnews.microsoft.com

And as Bob Butler indicated, Thunderbird should be able to
handle that, I would think. They provide the source code but
I haven't really looked into it. I think it's written in C/C++.

The second link is the link to the latest VC source code. The first is the
page containing the second link. The latest release is dated June 8th,
2004, in case you didn't know there was a new release.

Currently Agent requires separate instances for each news/mail
server.

Version 2.1 should allow multiple news/mail servers with one
instance.

But the best feature of all is no HTML rendering.

Seems like everybody here loves to "QUOTE" everyone.....

Solution to your prob is simple.

www.ReadNotify.com

www.self-destructing-email.com/

These are two great services.
We've used them both.
No virus, worm, or anything bad.

BTW, it doesn't matter why someone wants to use it.

Just like when somebody asks for something, it doesn't matter why!!
Just give 'em the information.

It's like you're trying to tell the person what they
want or don't want.
