Author Can I still buy VB 5 or 6 ?
Roger

Hi All,
I would like to buy VB 5 or 6, I have searched the internet but it looks like this is against microsoft's policy. Does anyone know where I can get it (must be legal).
Thanks in advance, Roger.

Try Ebay...
Mark (it's where I got my VB6...)

I can't personally vouch for any of the vendors listed, but you might
want to check out the referenced links listed here...

The original post was missing, so I'll latch onto this strand

Be /very/ careful buying software from EBay
- you could land up paying full price for CD copies or Thai/Hong
Kong/Taiwan copies

If you /just/ want to use VB5/6 then steal a copy

If you want a proper licence then buy VB.NET and 'do a downgrade'

Have a long look at this link:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vbasic/pr.../downgrade.aspx

From my experience patrolling EBay for a few months, if you buy VB5/6
there you will probably land up with an over-priced pirate copy

I've not watched for a while now, but that certainly confirms my earlier
observations when looking for VB6 (to move from VB5 if not <too>
pricey--it's been <far> too pricey imo, and many are either student or
educational if not outright pirated copies--)

downloaded VB3 from foreign site years ago ( before the heavies started prosecuting them)

found my first VB4 in a dumpster, whole box with all the books ,unsealed, from local govenment contractor ( musta been upgrading at
taxpayer expense!)

found vb5 same way from local business supply store, was marked "returned" (that's why prices are so high?)

actually bought VB6 prof ver, at a computer show, 4 yrs ago , $29.00 !

vbnet still unproven, so i aint touching it!

wheeeeeee! ;-))

You can order the MSDN Enterprise or Universal editions, each of which
provides Visual Studio 6 as part of the subscription, along with dotnet and
all the other MSDN goodies.

What really annoys me is when people are selling something as
something it is not - eg: pirates as legit originals

It is also quite difficult to tell what kind of licence these things
come with.

Frankly I am surprized that nobody is selling a complete VB.NET
downgrade package - the whole thing bundled up with 'provenance'

Beeeeeeeeeeeeves

I can understand VB6, but I can't understand why any private individual / home user (i.e. not a company in an office) would want a license for .NET. After all, if you've got a cracked copy you can just write your code using the IDE, then remove all forms
designer comments and claim to have written it using the SDK.

Ethics - something you need to look into

That IS something I thought of, and ethics is something I DO have. But when applying discretion as to whom to afford them towards, and especially considering the difference is purely financial anyway (and not someone's pride at stake or anything, for e.g.
), I make an exception for Microsoft.

Some people just get lucky! ;-)

Hey, what ever works.. I "retrieved" an almost fully functional
Sun workstation with Sun OS 2.4. Ok, it wasn't in the dumpster,
but it was on its way there.

I don't go into dumpsters, but I have picked up hundreds of dollars worth of
hand tools from the ground, one tool at a time. Found a tape measure in my
back yard (whoever lost it was trespassing); a pair of tinsnips in a parking
lot, they'd been run over once or twice but were fully functional; found a
brand new pair of needlenose pliers on the side of the road.

I've lost a few things over the years, but nowhere near as much as I've
found.

Well, I do. It's just a question of how many.
There's got to be a grey area - whether you're ethical or not can't be black-and-white, cut-and-dry?

In addition to what Randy indicated, there is an Empower ISV
program going on whereby if you commit to deliver a product
within 18 months that supports and is run on Win2k, Win2003,
or XP you can get a hold of a Universal Subscription for
$375.00 (U.S. dollars).

Microsoft is giving away some VB.net products free of charge.
Can download the VC.net product free. Then perhaps get a
VB 6 downgrade. After all, in the intellectual scheme of things
VC.net is a higher product than any non-net VB product.

;-) It works in my book, and it might be worth a try but you'll
have to go directly to Microsoft to ask the questions.
