Runtime error 3704: On few systems only others fine

I am getting a runtime error 3704. "Operation is not allowed when the object is closed" only when I run the application on Win 98 systems. I thought it was MDAC version so I upgraded to 2.8 but still gives me the error. How can I correct this problem. Is
this a system/platform issue?

P.S. This happens when I connect to a remote SQL server to download records. But in another instance I have a function which verifies the login by connecting to the same remote SQL server and the application doesnt give me any errors then. I am

oz if the application fails for downloading records then shouldn't it have failed for login as well. (Could this be a timeout issue, but then this Doent happen on non NT systems like Xp)
