The Stevens books are the best ones for learning UNIX network
programming. HOw much is your acreer worth?

His UNIX programming books are well recommended too, but I
(naturally) prefer mine (which is also $10 cheaper). My
home pgae contains a link to all the details, including a
sample chapter and example code.

Hi Rich,

Ah I see your point. :) And I'll be sure to check out your book. I was
to read that Richard Stevens had passed away a few years ago. BTW,
do you have any future books planned?

Regards,
Zach

Dull one. It truely is awful--finally Sun's Type 6 meets its
match!

No laptop (yet). I ordered one the other day, but I won't have
until the end of the month at the earliest...

Nothing planned right now, but I do have an idea for a book about
Open Solaris, from a developer's point of view.

Hi Rich!

Ah, interesting. I wish Solaris and Linux can have better cooperation
and join forces to battle Microsoft and promote FOSS movement.

FOSS movement?? Like in e.g. "Lucas Foss" movement
(http://www.newalbion.com/artists/fossl/)? What's that?

Even though Stevens has passed away, his books are still maintained with
new releases as needed. A team of competent reviewers ensures that they are
kept up to date and no technical errors ever slip by the team of geniuses.

This is an excellent free book.

Linux is close enough to Unix to give you a good start
on the systems end of things.

If you *really* cannot afford any book, I'd suggest
you read the unix/linux manpages. They are (should be!)
available on any unix system. Even if you do not have
"shell access" to a unix system, you could consult them
inline, HTML-ized versions appear anyway on the net (GIYF)

Manpages are *not* the ultimate source of Knowledge, but
they do hint you to the right direction, at least.
Add grains of salt, where needed ;-)
For the more delicate subjects (eg differences between
implementations), this newsgroup (and it's archive)
could be rated "suggested reading".
Be prepared to filter the information. Not everything
you read here (there or anywhere) is The Ultimate Truth.
