Good *nix language

| I have been programming *nix applications for a few years
now and grown quite proficient at it. So i decided, heh,
why not give assembly a go, so i did, and now I'm quite
proficient at that as well. So, the thing is that i'm looking
for some new language to learn, preferably with a good
connection to the fundamental *nix functionality (like C has).
I'd be glad to receive suggestions :-)

Have you already had a look at Perl? Can be fun (if you like that
kind of things) and will even work on other systems than UNIX
(but a lot of things show its origins).
Regards, Jens
