Small question....

What exactly does a UNIX (or any OS for that matter) systems programmer do?
Also, is it true that the number of systems programmers needed is shrinking?

Thanks....

I've always thought of systems programming as writing the tools
to make tools. So, an application programmer writes the products
used by end users, and a systems programmer writes the tools the
app developer uses. Naturally, there's a lot of overlapping,
and my definition is very rough at best.

I highly doubt it. People will always need systems, so there will
always be aneed for systems programmers.
