Author expect: how do i launch a process on another machine and then disconnect gracefully

I am trying to telnet to a machine, launch a process on it in the
background, and disconnect forever. But whenever I disconnect (for
example, by <send "logout\r"> ), it kills the process, even though I
tossed it in the background.

The strange thing is that if I use interact after starting the process,
and then control-D from the interact session, then the process stays
alive on the remote server.

What is the parent process when I do this? If I look at the output of
ps when I launch this script, it says that init is the parent.

Thanks.
