| Agreed. I hope my questions are not taken by the readers as arguments
against this effort. I am just trying to set the stage for the
discussions that need to take place.
If people would feel more comfortable discussing the topic within the
domain of a mailing list, I'm certain there are plenty of places where
such a mailing list could be built.
Now is the time community. For years people have bemoaned the lack of
an archive. Now we have someone stepping forward to fund the first
year of work. If this is truly something you want, then at least two
more things are needed. First, some people willing to seriously design
a system and see things through to implementation (not necessarily do
the coding; that effort can be staffed after specifications are
finalized). Second, a parallel discussion concerning continued hosting
or funding of the hosting for the archive is needed. Some sort of
situation should be set up so that developers have confidence that
participation will not be wasted. And adequate backups are needed so
that both confidence that the archive will be available, and
potentially, support for mirrors of the archive, are possible. (yea,
that was an awkwardly worded sentence. sorry...)
