StS 2006 at LinuxWorld?

| So, what do people think about Smalltalk Solutions being a part of
LinuxWorld & NetworkWorld?
On one hand, it may not be a bad way to introduce Smalltalk to a wider
audience. On the other hand, it's unfortunate that StS did not grow into a
bigger conference all on its own.

OOPSLA would have been a better choice, IMHO.

I don't think I'd agree with that. OOPSLA, although it had a period of
significant commercial presence in the 90's, started out as, and is
currently a primarily academic conference, with refereed papers,
proceedings, and so forth. Smalltalk Solutions has always been a more
commercially-oriented conference, and a large number of the presentations
at Smalltalk Solutions would not be eligible for an academic conference.
(But this is not to say that research or non-commercial presentations
aren't appropriate at Smalltalk Solutions)
Also, OOPSLA already has a reasonably significant Smalltalk presence -
trying to combine Smalltalk Solutions with it risks reducing the number
of important Smalltalk conferences in North America from two to one,
without greatly increasing the Smalltalk content at the one.
Finally, a large part of the point of combining with a larger conference
is to expose Smalltalk to a wider audience. Smalltalk Solutions, while it
has gone well, is largely "preaching to the choir", because no one who is
not already committed to Smalltalk, or very strongly interested in
Smalltalk, is likely to make the effort to attend. In combining with a
conference that has a commercial focus and a much broader range of
technical topics, we make it easier for our customers.
I note that a couple of people have expressed concern about the coupling
with Linux. I would like to point out that Network World is also a large
part of the conference, and we are certainly not restricted to Linux-
specific content in any way. Presentations that use Dolphin, MT, Ambrai,
F-Script, or some other not-available-on-Linux Smalltalk are most
definitely welcome.
