just an update on the Xorg issue. It looks to be a problem with
XSupportsLocale in certain versions of Xorg. You may be able to
work-around the issue by running VisualWorks thusly:

LANG=C LC_ALL=C $(VISUALWORKS)/bin/{plat}/vw{plat}gui theimage.im

i.e. force the C locale and the system may run.

We're looking to fix the system by having it default to the C locale if
there are problems setting the locale in $LANG & $LC_ALL.
