Many companies take the view that customers should be kept as far away
from the developers for as long as possible. That customers should be
kept in the dark and fed promises.

I think this is a losing proposition that a competitor could take
quick and decisive advantage of.

Think of being a customer had getting regular reliable reports from
one vendor, and stonewall promises from another. Which would you
rather deal with?
