Is there any reliable way to find fellow lisp/scheme programmers in my
area? There does not seem to be a good resource for finding scheme
user's groups around, or are there really not that many out there?

They are not only Scheme releated but just Lisp oriented. But the ALU
(Association of Lisp Users) shows up some local groups[1] in their wiki
interested in Lisp. Perhaps that might be a good place to start a contact.

Greetings,
Marco.

You may want to try Meetup.com: http://lisp.meetup.com/

You could always just try posting where you are to comp.lang.lisp and
comp.lang.scheme and see who replies.

Yep. First read comp.lang.scheme and/or comp.lang.lisp for a while
looking for a local user group meeting. If you live in east Kilkennie,
ask Google about "east-Kilkennie lisp" and see if you find a webpage.
If both of these methods don't turn up anything, Just announce on cll/cls
that the East Kilkennie Lisp user's group will be meeting at your local
coffeehouse, and then go to the meeting.

Reliable, no. But if people advocate it long enough (as Bill Clementson
did) it may become one. Whether it's the best possible way is
debatable, though.
