[I...can't...resist....opening the "AI is possible or not" thread]
Humans clearly exist. What is not clear is whether or not their abilities can
be accurately or even reasonably be realized by a von-Neuman computing
machine.
Certainly all attempts to date have not worked. But then there are some pretty
systems that do things much better than a few years ago (e.g. driving in
the desert). Maybe all we are is the appropriate collection of "tricks".
Many (most?) comp sci freaks often assume the universe is essentially
equivalent to a digital computer, so it must be possible, at least
conceptually.
But that assumption is a rather non-trivial belief about how the universe
works, and one that needs to be tested, as good science demands.
I believe that a smart machine is theoretically possible simply because we
exist. How that machine would or could work is not at all clear to me.
To date, we only know how to make smart "machines" by making babies.

Eh. Not terribly important. If it turns out they can't, then
we'll wind up building some other type of machine.

Hmmm... a quantum cellular finite state automaton, of fractional
dimension, perhaps. "Digital computer" is way too limiting.

Yep. And that's a pretty good start.
