Author syntax-case = syntax-rules + define-macro ?

After studying syntax-case more, I'm beginning to feel that it is
indeed essentially a union of define-macro and syntax-rules. If this
is not the case, can anyone give an example of something (preferably
useful and simple) that syntax-case can do, but a combination of
define-macro and syntax-rules can't?
