Blobs or FileCopy to Copy Files

Recently I have been given a task to redesign a system that does some
file copies. After looking into the code I noticed that the person
who wrote the system read files into blobs then wrote them out of the
blobs to the locations. I was wondering why he did this instead of
just using FileCopy. Is there a performance increase or is this just
some guy trying to be creative?
