APPEON for PowerBuilder

| We have five medium sized PowerBuilder applications that we are in the process
of converting to Web Based applications. We will be reworking our database at
the same time to bring it into line with 4th normal form. As such many of our
datawindows will need to be rewritten.
Question: Can any one speak briefly on their experiences with APPEON and how it
might work in our environment. Thanks for all replies..

Hi,
There is a company called Ewak, who has developed a tool and methodology to migrate powerbuilder applications to web in an automated fashion.
In fact you can know your effort for the migration, before even sending the source to that company, you can see the sample report, PDF file which is generated automatically. http://www.ewaksoft.com/html/automatic.html
Also you can download the effort estimator from http://www.ewaksoft.com/html/codeanalyser.html
For more information on architecture and detailed migration approach, please visit http://www.ewaksoft.com
I am attaching a file which explains about PowerBuilder to web migration in detail
Thanks & Regards

| Charlie,
I have participated in several projects that use Appeon for converting PowerBuilder applications to Web based applications. Here comes my answer to your question.
1) The experience with using Appeon
The experience, as I summarized, is "4S": Strictly following Appeon's requirement + Strong PowerBuilder skill = Speedy and Super conversion.
** Strictly following Appeon's requirement: remember you are shifting from a 2-tier architecture to n-Tier architecture. The key point to ensure the successful conversion is to well prepare your system architecture, and make sure no connection and configuration problem stands in the way. You can follow the instructions in the Appeon Installation Guide and Appeon Migration Guide to do this task well.
** Strong PowerBuilder skill: Appeon does not require any Java skill, requires some basic application server skill, but strong PowerBuilder skill for the conversion mission. Appeon provides Unsupported Features Analysis tool for you to most utilize your PowerBuilder skill for tuning the application to be fully Appeon-convertible.
** Speedy and Super conversion: You can immediately view how a window will look at on the Web by using the Preview tool; you only need take less than one-w to get part or more than half of the PowerBuilder logics converted to the Web for a demo; the whole conversion project will save more than half of the engineering efforts compared with other Web conversion approaches. Besides, the conversion is super because the Web UI exactly replicates the UI of the original PowerBuilder application.
2) How it might work in your environment
For this question I cannot make much judgement because I do not know the details about your application. You mentioned that you will change the database to 4th normal form. Appeon does not require you make any special adjustment to the database, and if you prefer using 4th normal form, of course no problem!
You also said that many of your DataWindows will be rewritten. I recommend that while rewriting the DataWindows, you refer to Appeon documents for features that Appeon can support well for DataWindows and also for features that Appeon temporarily does not support. This helps you gain two purposes by one-time rewriting: upgrade your PowerBuilder application and tune the application to be Appeon-compatible.
Please find the documents referenced in the email from http://www.appeon.net/support/manuals.
Hope you have successful experience in using Appeon!
Regards,
Julie |
