Author PS files internal format different - how come?

Hi,

I have in the past written a simple program that examined a PS file,
identified certain commands like Move and xShow, and then manipulated
the displayed text (and the displacement array) to what I wanted.
These files where created with Adobe PS driver. They had simple to
read commands near the bottom of the file.

I now come to do the same to another groups of files and (shock
horror!) the internal PS format look very different. I don't see any
commands I recognise, let alone Xshow with display text! I suspect
this is more of an image dump. These files where produced by
GhostScript.

Would someone please tell me the difference between the formats and
(the million dollar question), how do I get GhostScript to produce file
more like the first? Or convert the second format into the first.
Many thanks for your time
Bryan
