MS Word and "Fortran"

| It is extremely annoying that every time I write "Fortran" in MS Word,
it tells me that it is incorrect. It doesn't give me the option to "add
to dictionary", only to "ignore or change". In HELP, it gives me a
superior and admonishing sounding "this word must always be capitalized"
spiel.

You can right click on Fortran and then click on "Add to Dictionary"

It doesn't provide the "add to dictionary" option. It considers it to
be a grammar error, not a spelling error.

Whats even more interesting is that "Fortran" is already in custom.dic.

| I am happy for you, Gary, that you HAVE a dictionary.
My version of Word allows more than one language and I actually have
both English and Spanish dictionaries and grammar files, but only the
English one is ever available even if I set Spanish as the default. It
says it can't find the Spanish dictionary even if it is there in the
same folder as the English one.
Equally if I load an imported Spanish Word document which internally
and correctly defines the language being used, Word treats the whole
file as bad english. My wife uses Polish, but that requires a totally
separate Word version for some reason, probably becae there are many
(multiple) accents on consonants like c,l,s,z.
I think the "Custom" dictionary you mentioned already was updated by
you to add "Fortran"; that's where the new words are put, but you need
to have it as an active aditional alternative.

Yup, it is active, because other words contained in custom.dic are being
processed.

Yeah, you have to disable spelling and grammar checking in MS Office.
When you go back over everything to proofread it, you can direct the
software to do a one-time spelling check, but that business about
correcting everything you type as you type it is just a distraction.
You know, it does stuff like saying "this may be using the passive
voice". Well, me and the antichrist just have to use the passive
voice sometimes because that's just the way things are. And if you
label a cell in Excel with "i" it gets changed to "I" and you can't
do anything about it except to turn off spelling and grammar. Too
bad you can't turn off the stupid precedence of unary negation over
exponentiation or the wrong order of arguments to ATAN2 in Excel as
well. Spelling and grammar checkers are written by idiots for
idiots and they leave the idiot's punctuation of the third person
singular possessive intact so that more idiots can read it.

What version of Word are you using?
I'm using Office 2000, and it's happy with either Fortran or FORTRAN.
Yes, spell check is enabled.
I wonder if everyone experiencing problems is using newer versions of
Word, from years when MS no longer had a Fortran product. The Word
spell checker does have a history of pranks (vandalism?) when it comes
to cometing products.

At least in Word, if you CTRL-Z a change made by the autocorrect
feature, it will back the change out. Bit of a nuisance sometimes, but
workable. Dunno about Excel, I never spell-check my formulas.

Perhaps you meant "I and the antichrist"?

Or "The antichrist and I", maybe???? :)

Even if you want the spell checker, I suggest you turn off the
grammar checker. In my experience, it makes many mistakes in
technical material.

In my copy of MS Word, it understands FORTRAN as correct, but not
Fortran.

Yup...that is now incorrect.
