Sun Studio 12 early access compilers go live
|
|
| robert.corbett@sun.com 2007-03-09, 4:14 am |
| Sun has begun its early access program for the new Sun Studio 12
compilers. The early access compilers are beta compilers, one
step up from the express compilers and at least one step down from
the production compilers. To sign up for the early access program,
go to
http://developers.sun.com
Please help keep use of Sun f95 ahead of Sun C and C++ on Linux.
Remember that the compilers are free as in free beer not as in
freedom for all uses - commercial and noncommercial.

Bob,
two w s ago I submitted testcases for ICEs I encountered with SSX3. I got
autoreplys that they are under review, but since then, no further messages.
The first incidents I reported were taken care of, i.e. made public in the
bugs database, within a few days. The review IDs are 915216 and 919547.
Could you have a look?
Thanks
Daniel

Were these submitted using the website http://bugs.cun.com?
If so, I know whom to ask about the status. If not, please
let me know how they were submitted.

I am glad that work on Fortran compilers continues at Sun and that the
compilers are free by at least some definition.
Searching "fortran" at news.google.com, the 2nd item shown is
Sun gives new life to Fortran language
GCN.com, DC - Feb 9, 2007
Sun Microsystems Inc. is taking a stab at replacing the Fortran
programming language with Fortress, a new language with strong
mathematical capabilities.
but there are no links to stories about Sun's Fortran compiler, at
least in the first page of links. Maybe you can post a story to
Slashdot.
Sun is sending mixed messages about its commitment to Fortran,
although this is probably beyond your control.

Sun provides extensive information about Sun Fortran on
http://developers.sun.com. I don't know of any articles
about Sun Fortran by people outside of Sun, but then I don't
know of any recent articles about other vendors' Fortran
implementations. Fortran isn't a hot new language; it just
gets the job done.

While I admit the title of that article is misleading,
I don't see it as a mixed message. Sun has been producing
new Fortran releases consistently for more than two decades.
I could see Sun dropping support for Fortran after Fortress
becomes the dominant language for scientific/engineering
computing, but that hasn't happened yet.
Of course, these are my opinions, not an official position
of Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Checking up on your bug reports proved to be a learning experience
for me. Both of the bugs you reported have been fixed. The fixes
did not show up in time to make it into the EA release of the
compiler.
The e-mail messages you received that contained the IDs 915216 and
919547 also contained URLs for checking the status of the bugs.
