'type' includes length, IIRC. If string and array(1) have different lengths, and
the indicated compilers don't throw an error, then I would think that they have
a problem.

I don't think so. For its faults, I've found the Lahey compiler to stand head
and shoulders above other compilers in its ability to detect non-standard
Fortran usage. Why should I ask them to degrade their product?
