Actually, the problems with that particular program occurred only on
particular PCs.
Other PCs that apprarently were running exactly the same version of the
OS (with
patches and all, as far as this could be detected from the PCs
themselves) did not
have that problem.

So, in the end, my answers to all people inflicted by this was: use
another PC :(
