I see "cygwin requred" treated as a negative. But I want my makefiles and
shell scripts to be portable, not just the fortran compiler, so I regard
cygwin as a positive. Besides, I don't want to have to learn anything about
Windows.

I also see comments about the need for simple installation on a Windows box.
The cygwin on-line setup seems just fine to me, and I am as lazy a
non-programmer fortran user as you can find.
