I started reading sci.math because I wanted to learn more math,
but instead I have learned more about cranks than I ever thought
it was possible to know. A guy named Underwood Dudley has
written several books on math cranks and I'm working through
one right now. One thing he highlights is how cranks believe
there is an implicit connection between the Real World(tm)
and the world of math, and therefor it is possible to invalidate
mathematical results via empiricism. And crank threads are
often like a train wreck: I want to look away but I can't.
As an aside, I've never been able to finish the Pierce book,
and <gumby>category theory makes my brain hurt.</gumby>
I still can't figure out for the life of me what it's *for.*
