To be fair, poor old Peter HAD cut off the ear of Malchus, a servant of the
High Priest sent to arrest Jesus, and that was probably a pretty severe
crime, so when the heat was on you can't really blame him for denying all
knowledge...(According to Luke, Jesus touched the ear and healed it).
Apparently he spent the rest of his life regretting this denial and finally
came to a martyred end, crucified upside down at his own request, as he was
not fit to be crucified like Jesus (according to the Apochrypha) in 64 AD.
(A pretty rough way for a bloke that age to end up...)
(64 AD is also the year that Rome burned and Nero fiddled... there may be no
connection.)
