I wonder hesitantly if this is actually born of hurt feelings? If
so, I apologise. I certainly wouldn't want to inflict injury on
anyone. I post to inform. (You have been pretty rude to me, you
know; hence the kind of response you got).
I can certainly be at fault in the way that I post. Something
that I notice is that, having been online for many years, one gets
hardened. You can only deal with so many trolls before developing a
reflex technique of slapping them. The trouble is that it can be
misapplied.
I'm afraid that like most long-term usenet posters, I respond best
to courtesy and reason, and rather firmly to jeering and deceit. The
dishonest will always meet courtesy with attempts to pick a fight;
these days I don't fight that. The tricks of the troll I recognise at
once, although they can be unconscious in some people.
But the consequence can be a certain unfortunate hardness. It can
mean a failure to recognise that poster K, to whom I respond today, is
not in fact the hardened villain poster J whom I flayed last w ,
despite the identity of their arguments, but a kid who has read one
book and is repeating the silliness in perfect honesty and enthusiasm
and good faith.
I hope that all of us would tolerate a certain amount of insults
and jeering so long as there is content. I try to make allowances for
mere clumsiness, although of course I get cross occasionally like
everyone else. The medium itself tends to make commonplace remarks
sound like insults, even when this is not intended.
Anything dodgy I just bat straight back. Abuse I don't even
notice any more. I've been abused by experts, in the past, after
all. All abuse tends to be the same. I ought to give it numbers...

Probably a wise decision.

As a matter of fact I have no interest in illusory 'victories' or
personalities; only in the subjects on which I post. Any troll can
wear people down to silence. I would hardly post under my own name if
I sought to do this.
Good luck to you, all the same.
All the best,
