That's why elevator regenerative braking systems are disabled on Shabbos -- so the work
performed by descending Jews is not used productively.
All work is not prohibited, just 39 categories, which are called melachot. One melachah
prohibits carrying anything, such as keys and watches. Another prohibits constructing;
opening an umbrella is considered constructing a temporary shelter.
If you really want to be amused, a loophole allows forbidden acts to be performed 'by
unusual means'. For instance, pushing a button with your knuckle rather than your finger,
or writing with your non-dominant hand. The word Pythonesque comes to mind.
