Judson answered MY quesiton and given that (at least) one of my assumptions on
where we agreed was false, I have not added to the discussion.

The only thing more "divisive" than discussions between "Christians" and
"non-Christians" are those between "Christians" with different understandings
of Christianity!!! <G>>

Hoo boy, isn't that the truth. As a Roman Catholic, some of the conversations
I've had with evangelical Christians at work have been, um, interesting.

Sunnis vs Shiite divisions seem to be at least as divisive.

I too am Roman Catholic. I love talking about the Bible with Jehova's
Witness people when they come to my door wanting me to read
Watchtower. They get real annoyed when I call them heathens.

If you really want to see 'em twitch, show them the origin of the word
"Jehovah."

Moses didn't know the word, Jesus didn't know the word. "Jehovah" started
out as a mistake in translation by Martin Luther when he used the consonants
of one Hebrew word with the vowels from a completely different word to get a
third word which, in turn, was translitered from German into English.

The JWs usually leave my doorstep pretty quickly when I tell them we're Roman
Catholic. Might be the slight stress I place on the word "Roman"...

I don't mind them. Anybody who tells me that if I am not saved, I
will die is quite pleasant compared to anybody who tells me that if I
am not saved, I will be eternally tortured.

I really don't understand how anybody could stay sane who truly
believed strangers, acquaintances, friends, and family will be
tortured beyond all understanding forever and ever without hope of
parole.

Heck, I couldn't take it if the most evil person in the world was so
tortured. I just don't have that extreme level of hatred to turn
myself that evil.

In the world 3500 years ago, it was probably seen as OK. Leadership had to
be strong and punishments were harsh. Simple people figured the harsher the
punishment, the greater the leader.

We moved on, but the scriptures didn't, and cannot.

That's why the truly wise teachers (who all lived within about 900 years of
each other and, in my opinion, were definitely influenced by each other),
never required punishment, never preached fire and brimstone, focusing
instead on doing good and treating your fellow man well. (Gautama Buddha,
Jesus, Lao Tze, Confucius...)

Pete.
