Author [OT] - Need help searching the web

OK, folk,
I have a TOTALLY off-topic request. I know that some of you are excellent at
searching the web. I have tried and am getting really frustrated.

I am looking for a portable combination cassette player/radio with built-in
speakers and stereo headphone capabilities. There used to be a bunch (by
Panasonic, Sony, Colby - possibly others) but in these days of IPods, I can't
find any that seem to still be manufactured. I did find ONE that most stores
are out-of - but that are instock at one store. To see the type of thing that I
am looking for, see:

http://www.zalmar.com/detail-Audio-...nic-RQ_A220.htm

If anyone can find any others (especially those still being manufactured), can
you either post here or send me an private email? I may go with the Panasonic
RQ A220, but I had one of those before and it was fairly "flimsy" - so if I can
find any alternatives, I would really like to consider them.

Thanks in advance, ...

Google is your friend! 8-)

I did a google search with "cassette player/radio" as the search string. Among
the 119,000 hits were:

<http://www.cbssportsstore.com/produ...oductId=2437358>

<http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/A...ractiveda669-20>

They are still being made.

There's around 200 different models at:

Nowadays most people don't need cassettes, as it's not difficult to
copy from cassettes to iPods. And there are some FM receivers that
can be attached to iPods. But AM is the hard part. I'd love to
have a combination music player that gave me decent AM radio as well.

I don't know what's available in places like the UK with its
high-definition radio.

Any suggestions on how to get that list "narrowed down" so
A) it does NOT include "boomboxes"
and
B) it does include built-in speakers
???

That's the problem I have had in searching

(I keep getting boomboxes - or no built-in speakers)

Certainly googling "walkman purchase" works, but that may be too
narrow without clones.

That is a conflicting requirement, Bill. What is your definition of
"boombox"?

Most portable machines that have speakers also have Bass boost. Give a
careful spec of what you actually want, and I'll give you a search string
that will find it.

The kind of thing that I am looking for is comparable to the one at:

http://www.zalmar.com/detail-Audio-...nic-RQ_A220.htm

these are
- "pocket-size" or so (weigh about 1/2 a pound or so)
- run on two (or one) AA batteries
- are "walkman-like" - but have the option of using their own built-in speaker
or headphones
- have both cassette and radio (AM/FM) - but not CD or MP3 players

I can find a NUMBER of these types of walkman-like devices that JUST use
headphones - but not many that also have their speakers.

Does this help?

The GOOGLE string: +"radio cassette recorder" +AMFM +pocket
+batteries -boom -CD

returns:
http://fineelectronics.net/product?...M-Radio&i=59354

.... among others.

Pete,
That search seems to confirm my "frustration". The "pocket type"
cassette/AM/FM players do NOT seem to have built-in speakers. As I say, there
used to be many of these (easy to find), but I don't see any - accept the one
Panasonic that I posted originally.

Well how about plan B?

You can purchase one or more tiny speakers, an adapter to split the single
headphone jack into L and R if you want, glue and Velcro. You can do the
math!

(First stop: Radio Shack).

I tried that at one time (using the "add-on" small speakers). This doesn't work
real well for me. (And I think I will go ahead and order a couple of the
Panasonic ones - before they disappear from the market).

I use this device for:
- when I am traveling on public transportation (and walking to and from where
I pick that up)
- when I am "working around the house" (moving from room to room
- when travelling and staying at hotels and at friends (and on the plane to and
from)

As I have mentioned before in this group, as I am visually impaired, I can no
longer "read for pleasure" - so I always have a "book on tape" going. The
library is switching more and more to CD's, so I may have to start getting that
device, but I prefer cassettes - as they are easier to "reposition" after I fall
asleep or get interrupted.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. It does just seem as if this is going to get
harder and harder to do.

P.S. Does anyone in this group use "down-loads" of eBooks (eAudible or
similar)? Last time I looked, you needed to download to a PC (or Mac) and there
was no (easy?) way to put this on a "pocket-type" portable (even an IPod). I
would be curious if anyone on this list has a "good way" to listen to
down-loadable books "on tape" while on the move.

I wonder how small this is:

http://shopping.bit-tech.net/UK/pro...00_Mini_System/

I found that from:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...tte&btnG=Search

http://www1.shopping.com/xPF-Panaso...reverse-RQA-171

>As I have mentioned before in this group, as I am visually impaired, I can no

In that case, maybe the following would be more useful - mini-speakers
that attach to an iPod. Certainly there are lots of books available
for downloading from such vendors as Audible.com

http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/prod...T&cm_keycode=92

This is probably best for listening to books, but I haven't seen an AM
radio add-on that doesn't turn your iPod into a boom box.

http://www.audible.com/adbl/entry/o...fid
fgo.0

I'd probably go iPod - but then find some ear-pods that were
comfortable to wear for long times. I did try some Bose In-Ear
Headphones at the Bose store, and they are on my Christmas list. But
they cost $100.
