Author XML (draft) Technical Report out for "intenational ballot"
William M. Klein

2007-01-22, 6:55 pm

The current draft Technical Report to add native XML syntax to COBOL is
currently out for a three month ISO/SC22 national body ballot. The draft being
voted on can be obtained online at:

http://www.cobolstandard.info/j4/files/07-0005.doc

If you are in the US (and/or want to provide input to the US vote on this
issue), then you need to send your comments ASAP. Preferably by next Monday (2
ws before the next J4 meeting) but certainly before February 9th (the date
that the internal US TAG ballot will finish). I would suggest that you send
your comments to BOTH:

- incits@itic.org
with a CC to:
- dschricker2@cox.net

Make certain that you clearly indicate that you are providing comments for the
US position on:
WG4N0267, DTR 24716, SC22N4172, JTC1N8456 - Native COBOL Syntax for XML
Support

***

If you are outside the US and want your national Standards Body to provide input
on this draft Technical Report (Good, bad, detailed or general), then you should
contact your own National Standards body and find out how (and by when) you need
to get your comments in. You can find out how to contact your national
standards body by going to:

http://www.iso.ch/iso/en/aboutiso/i...y?MEMBERCODE=10

***

Special Notes:
- This proposal is similar (not identical) to the existing Micro Focus
implementation. This proposal is TOTALLY different from the existing IBM
implementation.
- "Passing" (approving) this TR has no OFFICIAL input on whether or not it will
actually get included in the next full revision of the COBOL Standard. However,
if this gets approved "as is" then the chances are very good that it will be.
There will be future chances to comment on it (specific and general) for the
next Standard, but particularly if you have GENERAL comments on its approach, I
would suggest that you communicate them now - not wait for later.
