Fujitsu Powercobol installation
|

| I need to move my PowerCobol V6 from my old PC to my new one (Windoze).
I've done this before, using the technique where you install the product,
then transfer the license with a diskette.
Before you can transfer the registration, you click on "obtain site
license", which generates a key to Fujitsu's server, which returns a site
key by email. My problem is that when I do that, I get an email back
advising that I have no site keys available.
Do I have to kill off the site key on the old computer first? I dont want
to do something where I end up with no license at all. Clicking on the
"kill" button is scary!
So, what's the step by step process to transfer the license?

You don't need to do that if the machine you are transferring from
already has a license. To transfer a license you install on the new
machine, write to a floppy and then on the old machine transfer the
license to the floppy to be installed on the new.
You only need to get a 'site license' when you install a new copy or,
for example, your hard drive crashes.

No, it should be on the machine you are transferring from.

The process for transferring your license is:
1. Install NetCOBOL on the new machine.
2. On the new machine use the "Transfer In" function to first register some
information on a floppy disk.
3. Place the floppy disk in the original machine and use the "Transfer Out"
function to transfer the license to the floppy disk.
4. Put the floppy disk back in the new machine and use the "Transfer In"
function to place the license on the new machine.
6. Uninstall NetCOBOL from the old machine.
You would only need to kill the license if you were transferring to a
machine that had no floppy. The kill process gives you a confirmatiion that
you have to mail to Fujitsu, so they can increment your license allocations
and allow the server to issue you a new license number. (I don't know if it
might be possible to use the transfer in and out functions on a USB memory
stick; should be in theory, but I haven't tried it and Fujitsu don't say you
can...)
The implementation of this completely unwieldy licensing system, which makes
you entirely dependent on Fujitsu for a new license or license allocation,
no matter where on the planet you happen to live, is, in my opinion, one of
the major nails in the coffin of Fujitsu COBOL. This, along with the
complete inability to support their products (in particular PowerCOBOL with
DCOM+) is the reason why I moved off them and re-evaluated the whole
usefulness of COBOL for Client Server development.
Good luck with your license transfer; hope the above helped.
Pete.

It can be done on a network share, I've done that as my laptop has no
floppy.

And I doubt that it would actually stop someone determined to have it
on several machines from one license.

Especially if they have a RAID drive or Norton's GHOST.

I've tried using Ghost to copy the entire C: drive to another identical
system. But when I ran Fujitsu got the message "Restriction file moved".
Admittedly, I've not put much further effort into this as it's not that
important, but might be handy to be able to do someday (e.g. laptop).

Ghost it (using the options to copy byte per byte).
Transfer license to laptop
restore ghost image
Virtual PC is another option.

OK Frederico, as a fan of Virtual PC do you know if it will run on a
Windows XP SP2 system? My understanding (from reading the site pages)
is that it only works on Windoze Servers.

Virtual PC will run on Windows XP (any SP) without any problems.
Virtual Server will only run on servers.
Two different pieces of software, although still not at the same lvl
as VMWARE.
Note that Virtual PC is now a free product from Microsoft. this for
thouse that werent aware of this. This will include version 2007 to be
launched next year.

Thanks Frederico, I shall be looking more deeply into getting Virtual
PC, Ta.
