Does anybody have a COBOL compiler tape for IBM 1401, preferably the source
code distribution tape, but an operational tape would be interesting, too.

How about RPG, FARGO, SORT 7, Fortran, Fortran IV, ...?

So sorry, about three years ago I trashed a batch of tapes thinking
'these are of no furtyher use.'

Do you think something written that long ago would still be readable?

Good Luck.

I was under the impression that tape is virtually 'forever' if kept in a
dry place, away from electric motors, etc.

I read recently that CDs are good for 2-3 years, DVDs somewhat longer, but
tape is still the 'longevity king.'

Have I remembered incorrectly about this?

Depends on the way the CD was manufactured. See
http://www.cd-info.com/CDIC/Technol.../Longevity.html which
estimates TDK's discs to last 70 years, and Kodak's discs to last 217 years.
(included are a description of what (repeatable) experiments were performed
that led them to these figures).

I've had no-name "cheapo" brand CDs that have failed on me after 6 or 7
years, though.

The tape may be good but is there a tape drive that can read it?
