| I was told by my work to stop using NewsRover because I couldn't
configure it to not download attached files, and the company's
anti-virus software reported that it has to delete some of these.
I tried using Opera, but it doesn't have any purging. (It also makes
it easy to delete saved e-mail, but I'm doing my e-mail separate, so
this critical fault doesn't matter).
I tried using Thunderbird, but it's graphic quoting can fill pages, and
I can't select what I want to quote and hit a reply. Editing my quote
down is a real pain. (This message is in Thunderbird).
My most recent attempt is Free Agent, but couldn't figure out how to get
it to download messages in one swoop. It appears that I have to tell it
to download headers for a newsgroup, select which messages I want to
read, then download those messages. I don't have time to do all that,
I want it to automatically download messages. (Headers only was a good
idea with dial-up access) I haven't gotten past this yet to see how
purging and such work. Maybe there's a setting I am missing.
My system here is Windows XP. I use multiple news servers.

I use Knode on Linux. No problem with attachments here. but For a batter
solution you might want to uses Google's online newsreader.
How does this relate to COBOL?

It relates to having access to this newsgroup from work.

| I'm using Thunderbird and am pretty used to the quoted material
problems. But then I was using Netscape and it is almost identical to
Thunderbird.

Agent 3 will allow you to retrieve all messages at once. it is on the
folder menu, default folder properties tab.
As for not retrieving messages with attachs the only thing I saw
possible was to ignore messages greater than X number of lines which
is not what you need, although it could be used for that purpose.
I have emailed Forte about this particular situation and I will advise
when I receive a reply. But it doesn't seem to be possible.

The help menu led me to look there. I'm wondering if that option is
greyed out because I'm using Free Agent, or whether I have some other
setting off.

That might be a killer for me.

I have just downloaded the trial version and it is available.
Select one of the folders, then top menu ->folder
then "properties" or "default properties" - "retrieving messages"

You can't go wrong with Outlook Express. Sure, OE may have some limitations,
but so does my cat. In fact, using any non-Micros~1 news client in an XP
environment may void your warranty and cause the rocks in your garden to
grow fur.

It isn't the limitations that are the problem, it is all the
'convenience features' that make it so convenient for malware.

Exactly, I entirely agree with you, they should be running non-Micros~1
software on Linux.

Then people should inconvenience themselves and stop downloading dodgy
attachments and Buy/DL a virus scanner.
In fact, if this is in his office....there should be protection in place
already -and usenet use should be limited...maybe to its own servers if the
company is big enough.

.....Linux is my god too....just like Hirohito....and my fantasy football
quarterback ..

They don't know that they are dodgy until they download them, then it
is often too late. With some settings, as I understand this, it is only
necessary to click on the mail item - and to delete it you need to
first click on it.

If they don't understand that attachments may be dodgy they won't know
to dl/buy a scanner.

I can't say that football quarterbacks have ever been in _my_
fantasies. But each to their own.

No doubt Linux distributions are built with these people in mind. I'm sure
my Grandad will have no problem finding the latest patch for ELM once he's
managed to find and take care of the Audio card driver issue he had.
I'm going to start selling stickers for modded cases - "My other hard drive
is Debian..."

My "Fantasy Football" Quarterback, then.
An aside..and not directed at you at all.
You can always spot the Linux guy, he's the one that's in the room that
scared all the women away...

HI Howard,
Here is the answer from Forte Agent support people.
Part of my email the reply to the relevant points
---------->
>I would like to be able to filter usenet messages that have ANY type
> of binary attachements, regardless of their size.
>This means that the available option to ignore bodies longer than x
>lines is not an option as it could eventually ignore valid messages.
What you want is technically impossible. There is nothing in the
header contents, even if Agent did have full header filtering in
usenet, to definitively say "there's an attachment here". The only
way to do this would be by filtering based on body content.
The best you can do is "best guess" based on line count or subject
contents. As you indicated, line count is iffy at best because you
could have a very long text post or a very small attachment.
Similarly, filtering based on the presense or absence of file
extensions in the Subject line is iffy because it could be a message
+about+ a file, or the sender did not include the filename in the
subject header.

The only way to be sure, really, is to use a usenet service that
specifically does not carry binary groups and filters out binaries for
you.
I believe that the Individual.net service does this, for a nominal
annual fee (used to be free, is run by or at the University of
Berlin).
