| Hi you all,
Look at this job I submitted a resume to:

This would have been perfect for me. I got the usual automated e-mail today.
Should I follow up with a phone call or two? I was so excited about this job
that I couldn't sleep the last couple of nights. I even drove by the data
center on the way home from work last night. I thought, one of those floors
resides a wicked mainframe system, probably that new z9 because Time had
some issues with tape security. I've got a good base knowledge of mainframes
for a 31 year old. I've been reading up on them the last few years. There
used to be a guy who hosted the Hercules emulator that I used to log onto
and play around in.
I sure hope I get a call, opportunities like this don't come around often.

It seems that perfection varies from one to the next... 'Must be able to
move up to 40 pounds'? I studied programming to get *out* of jobs like
that... but that's just me.

I'd suggest that you make follow-up calls on Tuesdays or Thursdays between
10:am and 2:pm... and try to avoid noon to one.

| I called them up today and got hold of a young guy in human resources. I
told him I had data center experience (programming) and that we used ISAM
files. He said they will be starting phone screening shortly and that I
should hear from them. So I've sent them a resume, letter of recommendation,
and even some source code so they could see what I've done. And I followed
up with a call. I've done my best and I'll let it go now.

Of course posting all this here may have given you some extra
competition for the posts available. You may be spitting tacks if
someone else gets the job and they read about it here.

I would say you've done well; the worst thing you might appear to be
(depending on the quality of the source code you sent) is over-eager.

Doc, I spent twenty-plus years on the hiring side of the desk, and IMNSHO
'over-eager' is NOT a liability!

That is not my only motivation, Mr Mattias, but it is one I consider...
after all, a businessperson who ignores the pay-line might not stay in
business too long.

I don't believe I mentioned excusing anything, Mr Mattias, but I've found
that, in many cases, a Good Way to avoid making a mistake a second time is
to have made it a first time.

It seems that there is only one alternative to making a mistake a first time.
And that alternative is even better at enabling one to avoid a mistake a second
time.
