| COBOL User Groups (COBUG) 2005-03-23, 8:55 pm |
| Please allow me to introduce the COBOL User Groups (COBUG) to you
(http://cobug.com/). COBUG's aim is to bring together the grass-root
level of the COBOL community, changing the perception that "COBOL IS
DEAD."
Another aim of COBUG is to provide you a vendor-independent
repository of COBOL solutions and tools. COBUG has designed a
comprehensive web portal for COBOL users that contains references to
many COBOL resources.
In conjunction with COBUG's web portal and local COBOL user groups
(CUGs), you have a forum to:
- Ask technical questions.
- Receive presentations and training on COBOL products and tools.
- Keep up on the direction of COBOL technology.
You can also network with other COBOL professionals and find employment
opportunities.
You can add to the repository of COBOL solutions and tools by joining
COBUG today, "http://www.cobug.com/cgi/cobug/register/register.cgi". If
you know of any other COBOL users, developers, programmers, and/or
managers that may have an interest in COBUG, please introduce COBUG to
them.
Thanks you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Thomas Perry
Executive Director
COBUG

| Bit disappointed with the registration process...
They require that you enter a State or a Province IRRESPECTIVE of what
country you live in...
They have gone to considerable lengths to include all the Canadian and
Indian provinces, but I couldn't find Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, or Auckland
provinces listed... :-)
Of course there is no doubt that New Zealand is of less consideration in the
COBOL world than the Indian sub-continent, but it still made me feel bad...
:-) It made me feel even worse when I had to enter 'other' ...still, they
deserve credit for at least providing this option.
It should either check the country and decide that a province or state is
not required (NOT USA,Canada, or India), or, if you really MUST have this
information, provide it for every country that is divided up this way, or ,
DON'T make it mandatory.
I wonder if COBOL Programmers built the web site...
(Nah, they know better...)
Pete.

Perhaps they even used COMPONENTS to produce those droplists ..... just
that they forgot to tie the dots together for the droplists ;-). Doesn't
always work for Canada at other sites - apparently programmers only live
in the US of A. India - now there's some 'forward thinking' - thinking
to the day when those other jobs WILL BE outsourced ! (Two w s back
had somebody from southern India bending my ear to take another piece of
plastic - midnight their time).
Noble effort and quite well put together, but sorry, it is a rehash of
what is largely already available. If producing this sort of thing, it
needs to be up-to-date and accurate, and prune out the obsolescent deadwood.
Academia - only some 27 institutions shown teaching, which includes U.
of Limerick. OK you 'OO-crowd' - remember Mike ?????? telling us back in
2000 that U of L was giving up on COBOL, while he was doing his OO
thesis for his degree - then he had to move from County Limerick to
Dublin looking for a job. (Still the dormant site has some excellent
basic procedural samples).
OO - Samples -
Oh dear. One from Karsten - a real oldie which has a drawing of a
Dinosaur. Now if that isn't asking for trouble :-)
Samples available from Gene Webb from the cobolreport.com site. A
comprehensive OO program for file handling which he calls 'byte stream'.
Plus a skeleton for using SQL. Gene moved on to new pastures about 2000
too - using VB.
OO Books -
(1) Doke & Hardgrave - save your money.
(2) Gary deWard Brown - now retired and acknowledges he's not au fait
with latest standards.
(3) Markus Knasmiller - theory stuff - only 3 left in stock at
amazon.com but 21 for re-sale - that tells yer !
(4) IBM Visual Age - apart from my buddy east of me in Canuckia - who's
using OS2.
(5) Raymond Obin - good paperback produced on behalf of J4 OCTG back in
'96 - not much use to you now.
(6) Edmund Arranga (and Frank Coyle) - EXCELLENT - but out of print
unless you can pick up a second-hand copy up at amazon. (Trying to get
the diskette containing their source examples - Frank told me only last
w that he and Ed had moved on from COBOL....- explains why
cobolreport.com is now so very 'Active').
(7) Ned Chaplin - just theory - forget it !
(8) Simply just NOT listed - OO COBOL Programming by Will Price !
Content - Like Bill's FAQ - already out of date, but at least Bill says
that when posting here.

| Hi Pete,
Thanks for your feedback. The list of provinces was an oversight on our
part.
When the website was launched on January 1, 2005, it was launched with
the test list.
We have included a more extensive list based on countries where we have
received the most visits.
You can update your registration profile and add the New Zealand
Province where you are located by going to
"http://www.cobug.com/cobug/docs/registration0001.html".
We apologize for your disappointment and inconvenience.
Sincerely,
Thomas Perry

| Hi James,
One objective of the COBUG website is to put most of the COBOL
information available on the Internet in one location so that people do
not have to travel through pages looking for information.
For the first phase of the COBUG website, we included references to
COBOL information that was currently available on the Internet.
Although references to certain subjects may be out of date, it is still
available on the Internet, and some people may still want to reference
this information.
If there is more current material available on a subject, it can be
submitted to COBUG at "myContribution@COBUG.com".
Also, if a COBOL user has a success story, COBOL code samples, news,
white papers, COBOL website links, and any other COBOL programming
information that may be of interest to the COBOL community, please
submit it to "myContribution@COBUG.com".
Sincerely,
Thomas Perry
