I agree with your opinion of ESB. Their Blackhook is a great porter.
Their Doubleblack was world-class but they discontinued it a few years
ago due to a marketing error. They packaged it in one liter bottles,
which distributors and retailers don't like. If it had been in 12oz
bottles, it would now be legendary.

Recommended: anything from Cooperstown Brewery. Omegang, also in
Cooperstown, is an interesting Belgian-style beer, overrated IMO. I've
made eye-contact with brewmasters at both.
Other touts: Samual Adams Scotch Ale. Granted, most of Adams'
offerings are mediocre, but their Scotch Ale is great. You can't go
wrong with McEwan's Scotch Ale. Try Dogfish Head Chickory Stout.
Anti-touts: Shiner and Shiner Bock are crap. So is Coors.
