Good point. As another former Micro Focus employee said some two/three
years ago - he didn't have much hope for a language which didn't have a
support class library. Yes, M/F does, and to a "slightly" lesser extent,
so does F/J. (Possibly Hitachi as well - still as my Japanese is
probably no better than yours - I just don't know :-) ).
However based on your comments at other times - ".....vendors getting
burned on gambling and introducing features before J4 has arrived at a
Standard", only to find their features are partially negated by the
eventual J4 specifications - small wonder that there aren't 'common
classes' available. Even given J4's target date for the 'basics' on
collections as being 2006 (????) - still got to wait for individual
vendors to pick up on the spec and implement. (As yet, haven't heard a
dicky bird about anybody implementing the 'Finalizer' TR).
Those vendors with no current implementation of OO will probably give
the feature a miss. If anything much more likely they would implement
'Dynamic Tables' when the TR comes to fruition - and even then, probably
likely a year or more after its official publication.
One thought though with regard to IBM - their OO is structured to pull
in all features available from Java, with Java controlling creation and
destruction of objects. Is it likely IBM would introduce say IBM COBOL
collections running in tandem with the set provided by using Java.
