Yeah, but they were at it for a lot longer. :-) Actually, I was simply
quoting figures I had read, they could be inflated. Certainly it was many,
many thousands at the very least.

Well in view of the fact that you say you were quoting from a figure
that could be inflated, might have been wiser to be a bit more
circumspect. Can we take say AD 500 as a starting point ? That gives us
1,500 years up to 2000. So 1 million / 1,500 = 666 pa, assuming they
were busily knocking people off each year. I'll accept 'thousands' but
how many digits other than the zeroes in those thousand numbers.
(Certainly a lot during the Cru es).
Even though she gets bad press, Mary Tudor (Bloody Mary), according to a
non-catholic site, did in about 228 (or was it 288) poor Protestant
souls. Even one killed in the name of religion is one too many. I wonder
if anybody has accumulated the numbers for her Dad, her young
step-brother Edward (not him, but his uncles on his behalf) and her
successor, step-sister Elizabeth.
Unsubstantiated figures put the comment in the realm of propaganda.
