Shades of C, in a COBOL group, no less! ;-) It may interest you to know
that many years ago (~1900? I have researched the authenticity of this, and
it's true, but it's been a while, and I can't remember all the details) the
Legislature of the State of Illinois came within hours of voting a
resolution into law to do precisely that. Some quack had convinced the
legislature that this would make math easier for students in Illinois
schools, and they were about to vote the ridiculous proposition in as law.
Fortunately for Illinois, a university professor got wind of it and
hurriedly contacted a number of influential friends who quickly clued in the
witless lawmakers. If you have ever had to write software to satisfy legal
requirements, this probably doesn't surprise you all that much. :-)
