When posting to comp.lang.cobol please include a rate, or range of rates,
associated with the position(s) offered; to do otherwise leads many to
conclude that you are either trolling for resumes or running a blind ad to
determine rates.

More people speak English, as a first or second language, than any other.
Don't know if it's more than half the global population. Probably not.
Mandarin Chinese is the most common primary language.

Been through this one some years back Robert with poor Jose in Portugal
who wanted to do some printing with VISOC, precursor to Net Express.
Based on what somebody had written about writing to his in-law relatives
in Italy he said something to the effect Babelfish kind of does it.
On that basis used Babelfish to communicate with Jose. He, Jose was
delighted - thought he had found a friend working as a translator at the
UN in New York. Started to get complicated and one kind soul from Brazil
jumped in to offer his assistance.
The Brazilian had a crack for a while and finished up writing. "Oh my
God ! It is isn't English and it isn't Portuguese either !'

It's a shame to miss out on a good laugh. Just to continue above. I
found another translator that included Welsh ! Completely forgotten the
site name. "That's interesting I'll give it a shot". So I immediately
think of the anthem, not the guy with big ears :-
"God Bless the Prince of Wales" - translate --->
Certainly don't know Welsh but being up in Llandudno during WWII with an
auntie, had to learn their National Anthem, which then I could sing with
melodious tones. Phonetically one line is "Gwlad, Gwlad" pronounced with
a cough-sound, (much like Dutch), "Wales, Wales". I could sorta pick out
the sense of the translation - looked OK to me. Well done. Now let's
translate that back to English. WELL !........ I completely forget the
translation, but it had absolutely no relevance to what it was being
asked to translate, and could just as easily have been :-
"Have a nice day"
Now if I put the Welsh version of their National Anthem through the
translator, in all probability could have given me something back like :-
Knees up Muvver Brown,
Knees up Muvver Brown,
Under the table you must go,
E, I, E, I,
E, I, O ..........
For the non-British audience I'm guessing 'Mother Brown' is a Cockney
song. Those with 'older' memories, think of the musical version of the
GBS Pygmalion, 'My Fair Lady' where Eliza Doolittle's Dad, (played by
Stanley Holloway), sings, "Wiv a little bit of luck", or "I'm gettin'
married in the mornin'" - same sort of tempo.
