Every checking account comes with a free debit card, free internet
queries and internet bill-pay that's either free or very inexpensive
($5/mo). Every supermarket checkout lane has a debit/credit card
reader, plus there's an ATM in front of the store.
Yet, fat ladies CONTINUE holding up the line writing checks (and
asking the clerk for today's date). I don't know why stores put up
with it. Some stores (Wal-Mart for one) have even installed check
scanners. The clerk grabs the blank check if possible, scans it to get
the account number, the computer does an ACH transfer out of the
customer's account like a debit card would, the clerk returns the
blank check saying 'It's paid. Don't forget to enter this check in
your journal.' The customer looks dumbfounded. I couldn't believe it
the first time I saw that.
