I think they join because of their state's economy, not because of
ideology. After leaving high school, an 18-19 year-old has three
choices:
1. Get a job
The states near the top of the list are primarily rural, offering
relatively fewer job opportunities. When's the last time you saw an ad
for a programming job in Wyoming or Montana?
The states near the bottom of the list are urbanized and have better
job opportunities.
2. Go to college
In rural places, fewer parents can afford to send their kid to
college.
In blue states, kids with the intelligence (and some without) are
pushed into college by parents and peers. That's why the Ivy League is
in the NorthEast rather than Texas.
3. Join the military
Requires no money nor high intelligence. Offers some their only
chance to go to college. Promises more adventure than flipping
burgers.
