I have a client who clicks on every stupid link that pops up on his
screen, and that often causes system damage that prevents my Clipper
application from running on his computer. These are the first things I
do to bring his computer back to life:
Scan with a different virus scanner, for example the free ClamWin
Antivirus. There is no virus scanner that can identify every single
virus, so in a situation like this it is a good idea to use more than
one.
Even if there is no virus present after scanning, there may be damaged
system files. Some viruses delete or corrupt autoexec.nt and/or
config.nt, so check that those are OK (compare them to a working Win2k
install) as well as all the divers loaded by them. Also check
command.com.
There is also a possibility that a system file has been replaced by a
malicious executable with the same name, so right-click the ones
related to the vdm and compare the version info and file sizes to
known good files on other Win2k machines. Googling for "virus" plus
each of those file names may also give you valuable hints.
Good luck :-)
Regards,
Klas

It could be a corrupted (or missing) CONFIG.NT and/or AUTOEXEC.NT caused by
spyware or other malware. These files belong in %systemroot%\system32
directory. If their contents look suspicious replace them from backups
stored in the %systemroot%\Repair directory.
