Harbour authors: Why are you doing this?
|
|
| Mahanimann 2006-03-31, 9:55 pm |
| ....making it impossible to download the Harbour binaries and sourcecode from
your site? How are we supposed to download them? The FTP download keep
asking for a username and a password and there are no binary or source
packages to download at SourceForge (at least I can't find them, if they are
there you have hidden them well).
It was the same for 6 months ago (sept./oct last year). Don't you think
it's likely that you have lost potentialy new users because of this?
Sorry for the harsh words but this must be a problem not only for me, but
also for the growth of the community.
Again, I don't mean to flame you, but I assume of course that you want also
new people to use what you are spending so much time making (and for free).
Thanks for any reply,
Mahanimann

Please take a look at
http://www.ncftp.com/ncftpd/doc/mis..._firewalls.html
http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html
http://cr.yp.to/ftp/security.html
quote:
FTP is a security disaster, even when it is used with a transparent TCP security mechanism such as IPSEC. I recommend that FTP never
be used for anything other than retrieval of public files through PASV.
Unfortunately, as of 1999, FTP remains one of the Internet's most popular file upload mechanisms.
See above, year 1999 !!!
Also this may be interesting:
http://www.codeproject.com/cpp/ProxyFtp.asp
But I agree that HTTP download would be much more friendly.

| Hi Roman,
I have tried playing with passive/active mode, with/without firewall etc., I
just don't get in. Well, I do get in some circumstances (in root) but with
no files nor directories listed.
This is amateurish.
Thanks for replying,
Mahanimann

The last mark on www.harbour-project.org was in June. Is there anybody home?
