| Dave,
I was looking at the Add/Remove program box in XP pro and noticed that the
Expert Guide icon appeard next to several of the HotFix entries. Just for
your information.
Thanks for all your work.

As best as I can tell this is a standard problem with XP and 2K and it isn't
just something about WEG. I've seen this sort of thing before and all sorts
of icons seem to get mixed up. On my XP box right now I've got HotFixes, and
other Microsoft software, using the Quicken for Windows icon. I've also got
examples of other entries using the wrong icons. In my case, on my XP box,
only one of them is incorrectly displaying the WEG icon.

My pleasure.

If it's anything like NT/98, a quick search for "ShellIconCache" should find
you a solution. IIRC, it's as simple as deleting the file, but don't take
my word for it. :)

Delete a windows "system" file, just for fun, hahaha! What, you think I've
got all afternoon to spend restoring my machine? <FX: dribbles onto keyboard
and mumbles in an incoherent way while trying to eat a copy of Petzold>.
I did try TweakUI's icon-fix option and that didn't seem to make one jot of
difference. Being the total coward I am when it comes to this sort of thing
I'm more than happy for Windows to be about uninstaller icons.

Don't worry, Dave - Ray's suggestion is the correct one. Be brave!
However, before you ask, I will *not* be driving for 3 hours to bail
you out when it all goes pear-shaped ;-)

TweakUI's icon-fix is only for desktop icons, which can also become
badly sometimes.

I've searched both my XP and 2K boxes and can't find the bloody thing. Any
idea where it lives?

Pants! Err, the fan's making odd noises...

Ahh, that'd explain it then. For some reason I thought that it fixed all of
the shell icons.

In XP you'll find it here:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your User Name>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Iconcache.db
Trust M$ to not only change the name, but also where it lives!
Note that this is a hidden file. Maybe you should just rename it for
safety ;-) BTW, I just looked at mine & it's over 5Mb !!!

So? Just turn the background music up & pretend I've fixed it.

Or in the %APPDATA directory for short. Yup, got that there. So, tried
deleting yours yet (he says, hoping to find a sucker to try it before I do
<g> )?

Seems I'm not trying hard enough, mine's only 3.7. Anyway, thanks for that;
if this ever becomes an FAQ in regard to something like WEG I'll keep this
in mind. Might also now be worth a Google on the issue...

Ooo, nice fix! How fortuitous that my /Guns 'n' Roses Greatest Hits/ turned
up in the post this morning. That should do the job.

Update (for those that are interested): Dave was brave enough to try
this & although it made his destop icons draw faster, it had no effect
on the actual problem :(

Me, I'd sooner listen to fan noise ;-)
Hang on, with 11 machines on 24x7, I *do* listen to fan noise! What's
that? YOU'LL NEED TO SPEAK LOUDER.

It also made be feel warm and fuzzy inside, and just a little brave. ;>

Pah! Old farts, don't understand good music to code to! Fancy not liking Bob
Dylan, Wings or The Rolling Stones -- just with added distortion.

Wings?!? Now that's really an insult!
The only think GnR have in common with St. Bob & The Glimmer Twins is
electricity. Just wait until your machine collapses in a heap & this
old fart will suddenly develop total deafness in response to your
cries for help...

I hope you were in a position of supplication when you wrote that ;-)
