Not a good situation. Anytime there is a difference in ground
potential between the two structures - guess what? This could be a
nightmare waiting to happen. Back in the olden days of RS-232
communication it was not uncommon for these types of installations to
start the serial ports on fire. Very nasty smell.

As a rule of thumb. You never connect two points with a wire that are
not on the same electrical ground. You don't want current flowing back
and forth over your network cable. The results can be very
spectacular.

I really doubt this has anything to with the formula problem but it is
very poor idea. A wireless link would be easier and more reliable.
