Author Extract TPS File
Jin

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine has a few TPS files that he would like converted to
Excel format. He used to use TopSpeed a long time ago, but now no
longer does.

I wonder if someone on this board would kindly help me to convert these
files? If you would like to charge a fee for doing so, would you please
be so kind as to name your price too?

Thanks,
Jin

Send me a private email. I'll need to know how large and how many you
have.

Hi Jin.
There are Office templates which help you to create a new Excel file
from your application. You just have to pass through TPS file and fill
up the desired cells ... If you have basic programming knowledge it is
very easy.

Zoran, thanks for the input, but if someone would do the conversion for
me, I'd much prefer it. I don't think I have the time to learn the
required programming to do the conversion.

Unless, of course, the asking price is unreasonable.

Thanks.

How many TPS files do you have? Send me the smallest one just for test
and I will convert it with no charge. Zoran

*sigh* just found out that the files are encrypted, and we don't have
the password. Do you know a way around this? - Jin

Sure, contact the author of the software and ask _them_ to extract the data
for you. (Instead of asking someone else to break break an other developers
protection)

We've tried. The problem is that the software was written by a
programming company that has gone out of business.

Unless the original programmer was very creative
(or very paranoid), the password(s) for the file(s)
is embedded as plain text somewhere in the ".EXE"
file. It can also be in a ".DLL" if he had partitioned
his code that way.

Even If he was very creative, there is a way around it
in 99% cases...

I normally do not like to get involved with this stuff
because of legal issues. There is always 2 sides to a
story and, for the moment I only know your side <grin>.
If it is truly data that you have entered yourself, then
you should have access to it for conversion purposes.

But there are some applications on the market with
proprietary data that is encrypted for good reasons.

Jin,

If you can send me the program and the tps files, I can probably help
you.

Thanks, Wayne

Jean: Thanks for letting me know about this. I fully understand where
you're coming from because I am also an IT service provider. We grapple
with ethic issues all the time and always strive to do our business
with the utmost integrity.

In this case, the data is a dental surgeon's own patient database. He
needs to extract it so that he can work with his data set.

Thanks,
Jin

Wayne: Thanks so much for your help. I've emailed the files to you
already. I'm not sure what program you want... is it a particular EXE
file that you're looking for? I'm not familiar with TopSpeed at all.

Thanks,
Jin

Hmmm. I didn't get the files. Can you resend them?

Thanks, Wayne

Wayne, I've just resent. Please let me know when you get them. Thanks!

Jin,

I got the files. I still need the .exe file. BTW, I noticed that the
..dll file you sent was for 16-bit. I normally can get password for
32-bit, but I don't mind looking at a 16-bit.

Thanks, Wayne
