help with spaces not being reconized

When I type into a drop down combo box I type a Name Bubba finds that
(looking for Bubba House) -- Next then type two spaces ( Bubba__) --
Then delete one space but it deletes both spaces. my counter for the
length is on 7. After the delete jumps to 5 not 6. So
delete 1x Bubba|
delete 2x Bubb|a
delete 3x Bub|b
delete 4x Bu|b
and so on

I know it is not reconzing the space I placed in how do you get clarion
to reconize the spaces.
