Filter by keystroke

Is there a way to filter by a keystroke? Filter down information when
typing into a drop combo box. This would be placed on an update screen
to filter down company names.

I would think most people just use an incremental locator for this,
rather than trying to actually filter the set. Look up locators in the
help
