Using DDE and DDEpoke

Using DDEpoke like shown in Language Reference Book on page 948 :

DDEPOKE(DDEChannel,'R1C2','Widgets') !Send it data
DDEPOKE(DDEChannel,'R1C3','Gadgets')

posts the error : "DDEpoke invalid command".

Does any one know why ?

All the rest of the instructions work fine (Excel must be pre-started, cells are selected, a graph chart is opened, but the cells are empty because of the error).
