Hi,
I did some good applications using CPD 2.1. I earned some decent
amount of money from these applications during the early 90s. My
customers want to migrate to Windows for more than 4 years now. I just
couldn't decide which way to go. I don't trust Clarion for Windows and
I don't have the time to learn another language.

I tried CW2.0 when it first came out, it was very bugy and very
difficult to learn. It was totaly a new thing. Today I checked the
website for the company that owns Clarion now and found it a bit
disapointing, for example the copyright is still 2003!!

I have never found a langauge so suited to database programming like
Clarion, but I don't think I can bet my future on a language that
might disappear any moment.

I know this is not the right place to post this, but I just can't
find a better one, no body can understand the power that Clarion give
but you.

I looked at VB & Delphi but using both you would need a lot of time
to develop a really professional application (20 tables+/50 screens).
But I could be mistaken.

Can you guys recommend any good RAD tool just like Clarion for
Windows? Is there some tools to make VB/Delphi much more productive?

Thanks
Ahmed

Comparing CW2 with the modern versions of CW is like comparing a gas lamp
with a halogen bulb.

I'm very happy using CW5.5EE and people have told me CW6.1 is even better.

Ahmed,

Clarion 6 is prety good. There are a few problems with miscompatibility with
old versions of Windows, but it is not a major issue.
Clarion will not die because there are enough developers who would never
betray it.
About Delphi and VB, it is as complicated as Clarion, the point is to get
the idea about it. But if you have difficulties with them then stick to
Clarion.

My advice is get Clarion 6 and move to Windows platform.

Hi Ahmed,

There is a bit of a learning curve going from Clarion 2.003 to Clarion 5.5ee. The learning is well worth it. I have some clients
who I support that have databases written in other languages. Sometimes (especially the C++ applications), take so much time to
modify, that I actually feel guilty charging my $100 an hour for things that could be done in Clarion for 20% to 25% of the
cost. Over the last 5 years or so, I have moved most of my clients to Clarion. In order to encourage them to go for the change,
I gave them a 50% discount on converting there original application.

As to Clarion fading away, I must disagree. I think that it has matured rather well & it continues to make myself and other
programmers more productive when it comes to developing databases. I have four full time programmers and a waiting list out one
year, and know that I couldn't get half as much done with any of the other database solutions out there.

I certainly would not hang a decision on a copyright date a few months old.
Clarion 6.1 is almost ready.

However, coming from the DOS world, the only thing you really need to
understand above all else are events. Ignore everything else until you know
events cold and can work with them. I base this on actual learning
experiences of others over 4 years.

Concentrate on events, everything else falls into place. What does not is
easy to study. But events answers the when and where embedded code (if
really needed at all) goes.

Hi Ahmed,

I worked at Borland and participated in the release of Delphi 6.0. I'm in
the Easter Egg. :)

With both to choose from, I inevitably still pick Clarion when I want to
bring up an app. Much of this may be just personal style. Although both
Clarion and Delphi support database integration, I feel that Clarion does it
in a much more elegant way.

I love how you virtually design your Clarion application by defining all the
rules and attributes in the DB schema. I love how, once you have done a
thorough and diligent job of defining your data environment, Clarion then
happily gens a skeletal app for you at the push of a button. Then you begin
the fun work of rock polishing.

Sorry, I'm hooked. And I know there are many more passionate and far more
capable than myself out there. I cannot imagine Clarion ever just "going
away."

"Good RAD tool like Clarion for Windows?" If there is such a product, I am
not aware of it. There really is nothing like C4W anywhere.

I have moaned over Topspeed's relative low profile in the marketplace, while
the Microsofts, Borlands, Cognoses, and Powerbuilders hit the big time. But
maybe Clarion's modest market presence and true developer-orientation are
linked in a way the others may never hope to approach.

Clarion rocks!!!

<EndRant>

I've started programming in the DOS ver too. Prior to that I used
various development and languages. Using Clarion was a huge step forward.

A few years ago I was asking the same questions as you. I now use
Clarion 55PE and hope to upgrade soon to 6.x.

There are enough developers still using Clarion to convince me to stick
with it. In the unlikely event it does vanish, the current versions
could still be used for the forseable future, enough time at any rate to
look at other solutions.
